A few Words of Wisdom on Short Shots

When we ask customers what their most pressing quality issues are, short shots or non-filled parts are inevitably on the list. So why don’t we start by defining what a short shot is. A short shot is when a plastic part does not completely fill out. A portion of it is missing. A few issues can cause shorts and the fix is not always that straight forward. Poor venting, material variations, improper machine settings, blocked gates, or other possible mechanical failures can cause them. Stihl is Awarded the 2015 RJG Training Excellence Award
RJG created the RJG Training Excellence Award as a way to recognize clients for their commitment to the RJG Master MolderSM Certification program. The award was presented to Benjamin Hoffman, Manager of Special Projects, on behalf of Stihl, Inc. of Virginia Beach, VA in RJG’s booth at the 2015 NPE Trade show. “The RJG on-site training programs have helped us to systematically build a common knowledge base within all technical levels of our organization. The Master Molder certification program further enhanced our technician’s skill level and accompanied the introduction of scientific molding. RJG did an excellent job adapting to our specific training needs and requirements,” says Benjamin Hoffman of Stihl, Inc. Over the years the Master Molder certification program has evolved into the industry standard for injection molding processing training. Stihl has received this award because of the company's dedication to improving the skill levels of it's employees.

New Course Coming Soon! Scientific CoolingTM
RJG is excited to offer Burger & Brown Engineering's Scientific CoolingTM course! This comprehensive two-day class is for designers, mold builders, tooling engineers, and mold technicians who want to better understand and control the effects of mold cooling resulting in a more robust mold designs, mold builds, and molding processes.

Participants will learn the tools needed to analyze Heat Energy and the Mold Cooling Management required to produce consistent, profitable parts. Participants will learn to systematically challenge the design of new molds and uncover issues with existing molds through a development of best practices for Mold Cooling Management.

Course Objectives:

  • Learn energy principles in relation to specific polymers.
  • Understand how Heat Transfer and Energy Flow affect part quality and cycle time.
  • Create Heat Budget and Balancing using Energy Flow calculations.
  • Understand Reynolds Number's relationship to Turbulent Flow.
  • Learn Turbulent Flow's impact on sustainable molding practices.
  • Study the 3 R's of Scientific Cooling to develop and maintain efficient cooling setup and processes.
  • Review coolant delivery and distribution principles.
  • Discover water chemistry's effect on cooling efficiency.
  • Participate in "Hands-On" activities to reinforce learning objectives.
  • Receive an introduction to advanced methods - Flow Simulation, Thermal Imaging and High Temperature Cooling Systems.

After successful class completion with a minimum test score of 70%, you will earn a Scientific Cooling Certificate, and you'll have the tools to implement Scientific Cooling principles in your molding process. The first course will be offered this fall. Check our website soon for details!

Did You Know...
You can reduce cut cables without ordering custom cable lengths?
RJG's "sensor cable stacker" allows you to order standard cable lengths and coil the excess in this low cost piece that clips onto your Lynx cavity pressure sensors.

You can coil up to 6" of cable in each or stack multiples in order to hide longer cable lengths thus reducing damage that can occur to excess cabling. Cable stackers are provided with each new Lynx strain gage sensor.

Training Spotlight: Systematic Molding in Elk Grove Village, IL

Our Systematic Molding is an introductory course for anyone who wants to develop a systematic approach to molding at their facility FROM THE PLASTIC'S POINT OF VIEW (as opposed to the traditional machine's point of view). Students leave this course with a better understanding of how to develop a machine-independent process, how to make data driven improvements to existing processes, as well as how to effectively troubleshoot using scientific and systematic approaches. Students will also understand the cause and effect relationships between the machine, process, mold, and material, as well as how and why polymer behavior is influenced. Are your eDART's™ running the latest version?
Version 10 eDART users can now download version 10.6.8.2 from our website. Improvements include support for the new Multi Channel Strain Gage system as well as a new safety feature which will help prevent accidental restart or shutdown of the eDART. There is also now support for the Peak Ejector Force Optional Tool and for the dual analog flow/temperature IA2-M-FT.

Version 9 users can download Version 9.4. Some improvements include a user initiated cross copy for defaults and security files, added support for Lynx protocol 3 and multi-channel strain gage devices, a peak mold open temperature measurement, and the math processing optional tool now allows the integration of digital signals.
